Artist Biography

Charles P. Appel is recognized for his romantic, tonalist landscapes. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and began his art career at the New York School of Art, studying under Francis Luis Mora (1874–1940) and William Merritt Chase (1849–1916), and at the Arts Students League under the tutelage of Frank Vincent DuMond (1865–1951). However, his primary artistic influence was the tonalist master George Inness (1825–1894).
