Artist Biography
Charles P. Appel is recognized for his romantic, tonalist landscapes. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and began his art career at the New York School of Art, studying under Francis Luis Mora (1874–1940) and William Merritt Chase (1849–1916), and at the Arts Students League under the tutelage of Frank Vincent DuMond (1865–1951). However, his primary artistic influence was the tonalist master George Inness (1825–1894). Appel maintained residence in East Orange, New Jersey, and remained active in New York art circles throughout his career. He was elected a member of the Salmagundi Club in 1906 and exhibited with
